The 2023 Supreme Court ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard banning the consideration of race in university admissions and the passage of legislation in a number of states banning diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in higher education has led many who believe in the necessity of these efforts to question the future of equity-focused practices. In this talk, Professor GarcĂa Bedolla will provide an overview of the history of equity-focused higher education admissions practices, their effectiveness, and the current student demographics in selective versus non-selective institutions. Building on that foundation, she will propose a path forward for admissions professionals interested in ensuring that higher education is as accessible as possible to all prospective students, regardless of their backgrounds.
